As the news coming from Egypt turns grim with 9 dead and more than 300 wounded Saturday, I am often reminded of the 11 years it took for the US to go from declaring independence from Britain in 1776 to the adoption of a constitution in 1787. They went through the Federalist Papers, two wars and internal squabbling about the future direction of the nation. Egypt has had 11 months and sadly there will be setbacks and fighting along the way.

I sat with Ahmed Tharwat, an Egyptian based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota vis Skype for a segment produced Saturday evening on the bel Ahdan television programme. The full programme repeats today at 22:30 GMT / 16:30 CST on Minnesota Public Television.

Here is the interview.

(Note to self: unlike in studio for a five minute segment, the camera is always running for taped interviews so you never know what will be used/edited in just assume ALL is LIVE and therefore ‘B’ roll so there can be no down moments to scratch one’s nose!)
